When you come to old age the whole experience of life is behind you. One becomes vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation. And after all the longings are over very few old people are happy, positive and can even smile.

I captured this portraiture on my visit to Georgetown, Penang. It is known for it’s vibrant street art scene. This old man lived in the Chew Jetty, the coastal side of Georgetown. He was taking care of his grandson as his wife, who must have been in her late 80’s, was making a handicraft sovereign to sell in their shop. This man caught my attention in particular as his eyes had so much to convey.

I will remember the people living in Chew Jetty for their hospitality, their lovely wooden houses, souvenir shop, food stalls and the stories they had to share.
